‘JERCS at Work’ – environmental rehabilitation around Lake Jindabyne
Rush’s Creek and Jindaboine Creek flow through East Jindabyne, over the foreshore and into Lake Jindabyne. Environmental issues identified in and around the waterways and foreshore include erosion, weed invasion (including willows) and loss of groundcover.
In 2006, the East Jindabyne Residents Committee (JERCS) obtained $60,000 from the NSW Environmental Trust for planning and then implementing rehabilitation measures. In 207 and 2008, the group has been busy removing invasive willows and other weeds from the creeks and foreshore, replanting with native species to encourage the return of native fauna, and carrying out works to improve water flow and quality.
In the process, viewpoints have been identified and seats are being built so that residents and visitors alike can enjoy the newly enhanced area.
The project has seen the Snowy River Shire Council, Snowy Hydro Ltd and the Southern Rivers Catchment Management Authority all contribute to the work being done by a skilled and motivated resident group to fix up their immediate neighbourhood for the long term.
