My Home, Our Town, Their Future – Jindabyne Action Plan

Snowy River Shire Council has commenced a planning process for the urban areas of Jindabyne, Kalkite, East Jindabyne and Tyrolean Village, their 3,500 residents and thousands of visitors. The Snowy River is an important part of Australia's heritage and folklore as featured in Banjo Patterson’s ”The Man from Snowy River”.

The Jindabyne Action Plan identified opportunities for people to work together to address a range of issues and access Federal and State funding for infrastructure and improvements to the town. Within the Jindabyne Action Plan process, a number of technical studies have been completed, on traffic, transport and urban design.

This is the first comprehensive review of Jindabyne since the original town plan was conceived in 1960. Development of the Jindabyne Action Plan is based on a strong collaborative process between Council, the communities of Jindabyne and its townships, other key stakeholder groups in Jindabyne and visitors to the town.

The Plan is governed by sustainability principles and will be designed to enhance Jindabyne as a place to live and visit.

The project branding of “my home, our town, their future” – symbolises the plans intent to plan for future generations.

Extensive community consultation was completed between December 2008 and February 2009, engaging 419 Jindabyne residents and key stakeholders and generating over 28,000 ideas and responses. This is the largest community consultation program that Council has ever undertaken and the findings are delivering a comprehensive picture of Jindabyne and its people.

Key environmental management messages that emerged from the consultation process included:

  • Better access and connectivity to and within Jindabyne and better connections around the lake. People are keen to see improved pedestrian connections and pathways. In addition there were also a number of suggestions regarding improved transport options for getting around town, including public transport options.
  • Jindabyne’s lake and the surrounding natural environment provides significant aesthetic and recreational values to the community and an attraction for visitors. The consultation findings showed that there is an expectation that the Jindabyne Action Plan will improve and enhance the lake and surrounding area.
  • Strongly associated with the natural environment, many people commented that what they most like about Jindabyne is the healthy and active lifestyle that it affords.
  • When specifically asked to comment on issues pertaining to waste management and sustainable building design, respondents demonstrated strong support for improved recycling within the town and only 5 percent of respondents opposed the proposed sustainable building principles. In addition,, 84 percent of respondents commented that they would be willing to support a building project that demonstrates how sustainable building principles would apply in Jindabyne.

The findings will be presented in six separate volumes, each providing a comprehensive snapshot of the people of Jindabyne’s views on a multitude of important issues. The volumes are:

One: Executive Summary and Principles

Two: The People and Culture of Jindabyne

Three: Healthy and Sustainable Neighbourhoods

Four: Business, Enterprise and Learning

Five: Town Appearance and Revitalising the Jindabyne Town Centre

Six: Pedestrians, Traffic, Parking and Public Transport

In addition to the consultation program, Council is undertaking a series of technical studies about Jindabyne’s form and function, as well as examining patterns of economic and social life in Jindabyne and surrounding townships.
