What the results tell us for Palerang
Council has no licence or facility for collection, transport or disposal of hazardous waste or 'controlled' waste as defined in the National Environment Protection Measure (NEMP).
No asbestos waste is disposed of in the Palerang Council area landfills.
Council has no record of the amount of hazardous waste that is privately exported from the Council area. All hazardous waste redirected from landfill and collected at annual collections is exported from Palerang Council area and is included in the table below. Annual collections are sponsored by Sydney Catchment Authority and the Department of Environment and Climate Change (DECC), and all hazardous waste collected is exported for treatment at approved premises, currently by Chemsal at St Marys in New South Wales (NSW).
There is no official service provided to import hazardous waste into the Council area so this volume is likely to be minimal.
Private transport of hazardous waste is not monitored so Council does not know how much transported through the Shire complies with the NEPM.
Table 1 below summarises data from the annual hazardous waste collections Council organises using commercial service providers in collaboration with DECC and Sydney Catchment Authority. Council notes that these have not been comprehensive across the Council area for all years.
While there has been a hazardous waste collection in Braidwood for all five years, these only commenced in Bungendore in 2005-2006, Captain’s Flat in 2006-2007 and Burra in 2008-09. It is also difficult to analyse trends as the volumes collected of most substances seems to vary from year to year. Of note, however, is the significant improvement in total kilograms of controlled waste collected during the reporting period, particularly waste oil through the provision of permanent oil collection facilities at several landfill sites.

About the data
Palerang Council provided information from Council records.
Under NEPM licensing arrangements, private contractors are required to comply with the NEPM for the collection, transportation and disposal of 'controlled' waste. Council has no control over these practices.
The NEPM includes a list of Controlled Wastes which are subject to procedures for information collection and sharing between jurisdictions (see www.ephc.gov.au).
