What the results tell us for Harden

Changes to the listed heritage estate for Harden Shire over the past four years show that:

  • All 26 places reported in the 2004 Regional State of the Environment Report as being on the draft Local Environmental Plan (LEP) no longer are included on the LEP. This is because the draft 1999 LEP was never finalised. Hence, there has never been any heritage place subject to the protection of the Harden Shire Council LEP.
  • As far as the other heritage registers are concerned, there have been no changes to the number of places protected since 2004.
  • Council is currently undertaking a community based heritage study for the Harden Shire.  This study is expected to be completed by November 2009.

Heritage places listed on the local environmental plan

There are currently no heritage places listed under the Harden Shire Council Local Environmental Plan (LEP). However sites identified in the community based heritage study of the Harden Shire, due for completion by November 2009, will be recommended for inclusion in Council’s LEP.

Indigenous Heritage

There are a number of Aboriginal Heritage sites located in the Shire, however their location is not identified to maintain their integrity and to respect the rights of the traditional landowners.

No information was available on the condition of listed places during the current reporting period. Although each place listed in the Register of the National Estate typically contains a description and condition statement, the latter usually relates to the date of listing or earlier, and thus does not relate to the current reporting period.

Resources for heritage identification and management

The Shire has had no Heritage Grants Program and no Heritage Advisory Service since 2005. A recent grant from the NSW Heritage Office, with matching funding from Council’s budget, is funding a community-based heritage study. As noted above, the study will identify heritage items to be included in Council’s new LEP.
