Description of Project

The Aboriginal Heritage Walk saw illustrated interpretive signage installed beside thirty-three traditionally used plants along existing easy-access walking tracks in the Eurobodalla Regional Botanic Gardens near Batemans Bay. The signs include the Aboriginal name, usage and the value of the plants to the Aboriginal people of the Eurobodalla region. An information booklet was also produced to complement the two-kilometre self-guided walk.

The Heritage Walk has shaped up as a fun and informative way to actively engage the community in understanding and recognising Aboriginal culture. The project has been acknowledged as a very successful partnership between the groups involved, with the groundwork laid for future innovative initiatives.

This project is just one of many Aboriginal heritage programs being undertaken by Council in conjunction with the Aboriginal Heritage Steering Committee. The latest component of this project has been the compilation and publishing of oral histories and stories of Aboriginal Men and Women from across the Shire.
