What the results tell us for Young
A total of 77 sites in the Shire of Young are considered potentially contaminated (Table 2). Of these, 20 are landfill, 37 have been, or are, used to store fuel and ten are used to store pesticides. This extensive list of sites represents a significant improvement in monitoring and reporting of the potential for land contamination within the Shire.
In addition to these sites, Young has a very large stone fruit industry (predominantly cherries and plums), and historically a great number of chemicals (organochlorines, organophosphates, metals and metalloids) were used in the region on the stone fruit trees as pesticides. These included arsenic, cadmium, chromium, copper, lead, mercury and zinc, many of which have a low rate of breaking down, and tend to remain in the soil at high levels for a long period of time. Subsequently all 'old' orcharding land (orchards planted before 1970) are potentially contaminated, and require soil testing for pesticide residues prior to further development (subdivision, building, etc). To date some 25 sites, have been tested, with only one site showing excessive levels of Endosulfan and copper (Table 1). No remedial work has been commenced at this stage.
