What the results tell us for Tumut

In general air quality in Tumut has been good, although smoke from domestic wood heating has been the major factor in reducing localised air quality in the colder months. Windrow and hazard reduction burns can also contribute to temporary poor air quality in the Shire. Since there is no routine air quality monitoring in the area there is no way to assess whether there has been any change in air quality over time.

Expanded timber milling operations and the commencement of pulp and paper operations during the previous period were reported to have reduced air quality for Tumut Shire residents. Air quality monitoring data from the NSW Environment Protection Authority were not available for this analysis.

Emissions from motor vehicles continue to have an impact on outdoor air quality across Australia, although this is most apparent in the larger population centres. Tumut Shire is unlikely to be exposed to noticeable reductions in air quality due to vehicle emissions, although large numbers of seasonal visitors or an increase in traffic through flow may cause some reduction in outdoor air quality.
