What the results tell us for Tumut

Tumut Shire Council has no facilities to accept hazardous waste, and all such waste is transported out of the Shire, with the exception of asbestos which can be disposed of at a privately run landfill site near Tumut. The Shire Council takes part in a Household Hazardous waste collection run every two years by the Riverina Eastern Regional Organisation of Councils (REROC) group on behalf of it’s member Councils, and funded by the New South Wales (NSW) Department of Environment and Climate Change (DECC). Residents and businesses may dispose of up to 30 litres of any unwanted chemical free of charge at this event. In May 2005 68 kg of hazardous chemical were collected, and in May 2007 this increased to 451kg.

About the data

Tumut Shire Council provided information from Council records.

Under National Environment Protection Measure (NEPM) licensing arrangements, private contractors are required to comply with the NEPM for the collection, transportation and disposal of 'controlled' waste. Shire Council has no control over these practices.

The NEPM includes a list of Controlled Wastes which are subject to procedures for information collection and sharing between jurisdictions (see www.ephc.gov.au).
