Restoration of Bradman Oval

This "snapshot" profile celebrates a recent environmental initiative within this LGA.

Official launch of the project September 2007

This project involved the reconstruction and restoration of Bradman Oval located in Adams Street, Cootamundra. As part of the project sub-surface drainage and automatic re-use irrigation systems were installed and new grasses and shrub plantings occurred on and around the Oval site.

The restoration of Bradman Oval was imperative in assisting the management of urban salinity for the township of Cootamundra and Muttama Creek, as the Oval’s original construction involved the placement of large quantities of salt-rich landfill on the site. Over the past 30 years, the surface runoff from the Oval has collected these salt particles and washed them into nearby Muttama Creek which was increasing the amount of salt entering the creek system.

The automated irrigation system installed now manages excess surface and ground-water discharge and promotes best-practice watering by sensing climate and soil conditions.
The new plantings were strategically located to intercept groundwater flow paths from the north and east.

Sustainability Overview
  • Sustainability benefits from the project - improved water quality and appearance of the Mutama Creek and Bradman Oval precinct and reduced Salinity of the creek system.
  • Next steps – continue to monitor salinity levels in the Muttama Creek
