Boorowa main street upgrade

This "snapshot" profile celebrates a recent environmental initiative within this LGA.

In mid 2007, Boorowa Council’s upgrade of the town’s main street was completed. The succession of seasons since has shown the value of the project. Particularly in spring and summer, the flowers and trees have added a vibrant splash of colour to what was a somewhat drab early 19th Century street. The enhanced environment attracts passers-by to stop and the goal now is to integrate fully the main street into the town’s bike path and river walk to encourage visitors to make use of this facility.

Council has extended the bike-path to the hospital and Boorowa House complex: so senior residents who have to use ‘gophers’ for mobility can now reach the centre of town without having to ride along the roadway. Given the ageing nature of the Boorowa population, the extension of the bike-path for recreation and access is a major future project of Council.

Such beautification and access projects are increasingly common in regional areas and, when well thought through, successfully bring together environmental, social and economic factors. In common with other local government areas, Boorowa Council has the insights and motivation to tackle all sorts of environmental problems from the very small through to contributing to global issues such as climate change. But, the funding base available to local and regional bodies is constrained, so full use of local expertise and experience can be somewhat curtailed. Sustaining our collective futures requires a wise mix of acting for both the long and short terms, and using funds how and where the best results can be achieved.
