What the results tell us for Bega Valley
Other than smoke from occasional bushfires, air quality in Bega Valley Shire was generally considered to be acceptable during the current reporting period. Since there is no routine air quality monitoring in the area there is no way to assess whether there has been any change in air quality over time.
From time to time during the reporting period residents experienced a reduction in air quality due to smoke from fuel reduction burns. Smoke from wood fires has not been reported as a problem for the Shire, continuing a trend from the previous reporting period. The topography of the area generally results in well-mixed air emissions, due to drainage flows. Temperature inversions that would trap air pollution close to the ground are rare.
Emissions from motor vehicles continue to have an impact on outdoor air quality across Australia, although this is most apparent in the larger population centres. Settlements in the Bega Valley are unlikely to be exposed to noticeable reductions in air quality due to vehicle emissions, although large numbers of seasonal visitors or an increase in traffic through flow, may cause some reduction in outdoor air quality.
